September 29th and 30th 1951

September 29, 1951
Saturday

Cool. More fire today I baked 4 pies cooked beef + little hog meat. Washed 2 heads and rolled it up H came for G to work on truck. Tippy glad to see him. Said Paul S finished digging out the reservoir up home ready now for the wall, floor, roof....then water. Still have all 27 pigs all white!

Sunday

Very nice day No preaching 5th Sunday We were home all day. Cecil and R came at dinner. Then came M, F, + H was here till evening. Still have 27 pigs, all doing alright so far. We went over to old mans this evening. He gave me 6 big starts.

*Pigs?
Man came to shovel F's reservoir out, taken him 3 hours $7.50 per hour. We washed Mom worked on rags. E quilted. I must of messed around!

Wednesday
HOGS
ALL three hogs had pigs today!
Mommie had #11 the other 2 had 18.
Was cleaning and stirring all day. E quilting fast. mom working on rags. In evening I had Aid meeting here about 18 with kids.
Run out of gas.

*GAS
1 pig gone from each lot, leaving to date 27.
I ironed some, E ironed. Mom patched her gown. Made me clothespin bag, E quilted. G slept nap then pulled corn off. I went up to see how ML as taken her to the Dr. Got groceries at Safeway. Had good supper fried fish and fried taters and good cold water.

Friday
Cool as forty! E + I made Mrs. W's satin comforter...some job! Mom cut rags. I made fire. Pud and Ethel came for rest of pellets.

Guy's 52 B-day

Busy all day, no kidding! Baked C cake. Pies, fixed things to eat. then cut applies for a butter; got done till supper. Went to bed early again....no kidding!

***APPLE BUTTER***
Got up early and got around at 8; F+M came we [ut over teh apple for butter. Made abotu 14 galons 3 bu suits 40 lbs of sugar and 3 bucks of water. Good too! Every body was tired. G + I went up to town. Cinnamon ground...not the liquid kind.

Very nice + warm I went up to
Patmos to MJ for dinner in PM. She + I fixed baskets of flowers for in church. came home done up the work. Guy + I went back up to Patmos to first singing ever held there a big crowd and good singing was about 10:30 when we got home. E + Mom was home all day...Tippy too.

About
10:30 we went up to MJ's to help her can chickens. 5 old roosters F got at C millers .12 cents per # made 14 cans of meat and 2 cans of broth. Was a full day.

Was we busy! I went up to town and locker for beef, F staid here + worked we worked our soup stuff till
9 o'clock We fell in bed at 10 past 10. James called was surprised to find us in bed but we don't know how tired we were!

Thursday

Got up early and flew around getting ready to go to cannery. Mom and Isabel came and helped we made 138 cans of soup good too. E. I + MJ + Isabel got of it. We were completely worn to a frazzle when we got back home.

Warm as 40!
R + G working on hog lot at sproutsin PM. G sleeping, R taking his Mother to town. E is quilting. I patched several pieces and then got dinner. Made sparrow rib pot pie they sure enjoyed it; made tray of frostee too. No mail from J yet. Homer Lutz sent me 4 sets of pepper + salt set from East Liverpool Ohio. 2 negros, 2 round globes, covered wagon and baseball + glove. Sure is nice.

Raining thsi AM. Sure comes in good. G asleep R gone to Strasburg E quilting. I'm putting Mr. R clothes together + mopping. Luther wrote they were coming over this PM. To rainy they didn't come.
R went to Ediburg I went along to see Doug. He is feeling very good. G + Tippy went over to see old man and to get gas to clean 2 clocks. R left about 2pm for a a evening of fun he said. We had a good laugh out of Tippy and the umbrella because it was raining so hard.

Very nice day. We messed around herea t first; one job then the other. R left and went to town and up after her Mother at Ada's. They will take Aunt Sarah away from Ada's soon. We went up to town in evening. Mom got letter from Hollis.

September 16, 1951 *Eldena and Ralph married today

Opened new hospital today

Eldena's wedding day.
A beautiful day. Had a big crowd. R + I went to town. Got ML went out to wedding. Came in to new hospital to see it. A terrible big crwod there sure is a fine building. R went home about 3 will be 1 year before he gets another vacation. Came home and fed the stuff eat a bite and now we are all each writing.

September 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th 1951

Sunday

*Second Sunday No preaching at Patmos had preaching the first Sunday.
Killed 2 chickens, fried it and fixed dinner and after Roy came home from Church we taken dinner went over to Shawnee Court and the Jackson's + E came. We certainly had a good dinner.
R left after hoe about 6 then we done up the work and went over to Mr R's.
G not feeling good.

Monday


Cloudy, but cleared away. G E and MJ and I went to Winchester. G to stock sale.
E, MJ and I looked around, got few things. Green sweater $2.98, 3 pr pants .37, Blue felt hat $1.98, stockings .79, some odd and ends every body tired + worn out. Taken MJ up to W. Mom went along...out to stay till Wed
Got Mom several hankies and MJ got her a new ring.

Tuesday

Kinda cloudy but cleared away. E + I did a big wash, slept a nap with Tippy. G not feeling too good, he slept too. Had good squirrel for supper! Roy came about 6 for several days.
Tippy was glad to see him. E crocheting on hanky. I made up all the beds clean. Will dampen clothes down and go to bed!
Has warmed up considerable.

Wednesday

We ironed everything. E put edge on quilt. Then we put quilt in frames up stairs. E said she felt like a squirt all day. . G + R went up to the Stock Sale, taken 1 calf back. In evening R, E + I went up to town to see and hear about Doug. He was out riding his motorcycle out from Harrisburg Sun Am and was crossing the rail road tracks; his wheel slipped out from under him broke hip, right leg below knee, hurt right arm, and cut several places in his head. He was taken to H hospital for aid and on Wed noon they called ML that he was able to leave so she + Helen took a cab up to see him. Leg has a big cast, he is meant to go back up in 6 weeks.

Wednesday

*Calves

Cloudy some all day. R taken R to Nola's; he and D went to garage then to Stock Sale, then to Katherine's for supper. Came back about 8.
G pulled sprouts over then wetn to S sales. Got 2 Holstien calves$31 for one, $30 for other. Got #45 bag meal $7.00 for them. Nice calves so far. I sewed some, ironed and varnished chairs and rocker.
Cat scratched Tippy in eye...little sore.

Thursday

Raining good. Everybody kind of slow and lazy so far. G already gone to lay down. Was to go to Natural Bridge today but to rainy...then left here at 1 got back at 10:15. Milk fed calves.
Tippy was glad to see us. Had nice trip some place. E is to come back from Shen today.
Kinda rainy for her.
Fred have new baby 10 yrs since the last one.
Calves drank their milk good.

*Grace B has her sixth baby (now 3 boys 3 girls)
Sun out, bright. G and I are pulling sprouts. R mowed with scythe.
Tippy played till she was tired now she is asleep. I hadn't gotten anything done yet.
Guy shot Mrs. G's cat.
I baked apple + butterscotch pies, made applesauce. Cooked piece beef and defrosted refrig.
Borden's came, we went over to see Cecil milk with the milkers.
Had our last corn from the corn field.

Cool in house but sun warm outside. R went away a little. G asleep. Tippy playing. R + I cleaned the house. Have some sore throat + cold; guess too much wind. G gone + got 3 squirrels up in the woods.

Was busy helping Rth get dinner for Silo men 18 of us eat.
Came and filled 2 silos in PM R+D + I went up to town to locker. Came home done up work and went back to town.

A girl from New Market win the new Chevy given away at Fair ground tonite.

Rev CJ will preach sermon and dedicate the new Alter set at Patmos this AM. Very good crowd out. Everyone thought it ws awful nice. Nice good sermon too.
Borden's went to Kibler reunion and I staid at MJ's
F + H went to town and M + I talked real fast. Came home late. D staid up.
It has been cloudy + a little rainy all day so since dark it has started to rain more; sure is fine.

September 3, 1951
Monday Labor Day

No mail today.

We fixed dinner got ready and left for W Va State park. Got there about 2pm. Made fire and fired hamburgers, hot dogs and onions. Sure did enjoy our eat. Came home by Broadway and dorm. Was late when we got home then Borden's + I went up to E + J's to Eldena's shower. A lot there and got lots nice things. Was later yet till we got home.

Very warm and bright. Borden's went to Strasburg first then up to Earnest for dinner. Came back here for supper then I went along to Rodney's. G went to Winchester to Auction. Didn't get any calves.

Tippy's tail is healing up now.
